Genzyme Selects Datastream 7iTM For Asset Lifecycle Management
Biotechnology firm will manage assets at two U.S. facilities and new plant in Ireland from a single Web-based system
GREENVILLE, S.C. - Feb. 26, 2002 Datastream Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: DSTM), today announced that Cambridge, Mass-based Genzyme Corporation, a biotechnology and health care products company that develops innovative products and services for major medical needs, has selected the Datastream 7i asset lifecycle management (ALM) solution to reduce operating costs and improve operational efficiency. Datastream 7i will enable the management of manufacturing, utility and support equipment while providing Genzyme with a cost-effective tool to achieve compliance with the Food and Drug Administration's electronic record-keeping and electronic signature regulations known as 21 CFR 11. Initially, Genzyme will implement the Datastream 7i software at two U.S.-based locations along with its new facility in Waterford, Ireland.
Using Datastream 7i, Genzyme will manage thousands of pieces of equipment, ranging from research tools and instruments to manufacturing equipment. Over the past year, Genzyme evaluated several competitive asset management offerings before selecting Datastream 7i. The company chose Datastream 7i because it provides the company with the capability to transfer and track assets across facilities, gain a greater understanding of how resources are deployed, cut maintenance costs between sites and gain a company-wide perspective of assets. Additionally, due to its Web architecture, Datastream 7i is a cost-effective enterprise solution, which can be deployed at a single location and utilized at all facilities.
Genzyme selected Datastream 7i to provide the type of electronic records addressed by 21 CFR 11 and to ensure compliance with electronic records and signatures regulations. Those regulations establish the criteria under which electronic records and signatures are considered as trustworthy, reliable and as binding as paper records. The FDA's regulations are intended to promote and protect the public health, while permitting industries, such as those that produce pharmaceutical and medical supplies, food and beverages and personal care products, to use electronic technology instead of costly and time-consuming paper-based systems.
"We selected Datastream because they were the only asset lifecycle management provider that could meet three critical needs: ensuring 21 CFR 11 compliancy, offering a Web-architected solution and meeting our implementation timelines," said Scott Morris, maintenance manager at Genzyme. "Datastream 7i is the ideal offering because its Web architecture ensures standardization at both our U.S. locations and our facility in Ireland. Additionally, because it can be accessed via a Web browser, we can easily choose to adopt Datastream 7i at our other facilities in the future."
Datastream 7i is the industry's only pure Web-architected asset lifecycle management solution with deployed customers worldwide. Datastream 7i is available as a hosted application from Datastream and can be fully integrated with iProcureTM, one of the world's largest automated industrial procurement networks.
"Pharmaceutical companies, in particular, need to achieve regulatory compliance for electronic signatures and related information as rapidly as possible to enjoy its benefits," said Larry Blackwell, chief executive officer of Datastream Systems, Inc. "Asset management solutions that don't make this an easy, efficient process are becoming obsolete. Datastream 7i is the ideal choice for pharmaceutical companies because it relieves much of the time and effort required to comply with 21 CFR 11. Our unique architecture makes managing assets across the enterprise, while adhering to governmental policies, a seamless, efficient task."
