Web Services Open Up a Whole New World
(From April 2004 Infostream)

Lately there’s been a growing buzz surrounding Web services. What is this all about?

In simple terms, Web services provide a middle layer between two applications that otherwise could not share information. The layer uses the universal data language of XML, extensible markup language, to facilitate communication between two separate applications, like Datastream 7i and other enterprise applications. Web services are not tied to a specific platform, operating system, or programming language. So now, through the use of Web services, Datastream 7i can be accessed through mobile devices, such as Pocket PC or cellular telephones, in addition to traditional desktop and laptop computers.

Web services are also useful for incorporating alternative user interfaces for commonly-used enterprise applications. For example, you could use a corporate portal, Microsoft Outlook, or a website to interface with Datastream 7i. Most users are already comfortable with these familiar interfaces and they require little, if any, training. This also holds true if you’re using Microsoft Project for project management and a separate timekeeping application. Data from both of these applications can be entered into Datastream 7i using a Web service. What’s more, data already entered into Datastream 7i can be pulled by distributed applications for robust data sharing.

Datastream 7i Mobile Solutions are made possible through Web services. Imagine if plant technicians could access work orders, complete the task, and close out the work order all from a remote site without having to return to their desk to complete paperwork. Web services make this possible by connecting Datastream 7i with mobile devices. Suddenly workers are more efficient and spend time completing their tasks instead of filing paperwork. And, data is more accurate since it is entered on-the-spot.

With Datastream’s Web Services Toolkit, customers can develop virtually any application that leverages the business logic and functionality within Datastream 7i. This programming guide lays the foundation for connecting applications that you use every day so that users can, for example, enter Work Orders through the Microsoft Outlook interface that they’re already familiar with.
