> Calibration Trends in the 21st Century
Thomas Johnson with Fluke provides an in-depth look at the changes calibration labs have undergone in recent years. Johnson specifically addresses the shift in the workforce and the increasing demands of regulatory agencies. Below is an excerpt from his article in Evaluation Engineering.
"Times have changed—and how. Market forces press calibration labs to take a hard look at increasing performance and reducing costs with fewer resources. At the same time, international measurement requirements have a major impact on calibration labs. And with the addition of highly automated equipment with turnkey calibration procedures available through the Internet, calibration labs are changing the way they operate."

> Datastream Completes SAS 70 Hosting Audit
Datastream is committed to helping our customers reach their compliance goals. That commitment includes validating our internal process, such as the Datastream hosting operations. In December 2004, Datastream completed the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ Statement on Auditing Standards (SAS) no. 70 type II audit. SAS 70 is an internationally recognized audit for validating the internal controls of service providers and other businesses.
"Our site is scheduled for an audit in the near future for Sarbanes-Oxley compliance and SAS 70 validation is highly desirable for our outsourcers. This is one more completed item on my checklist!"
Greg Rakaska, United Water
By undergoing the SAS 70 review, Datastream can provide its customers with a comprehensive report that facilitates compliance with federal regulations such as Sarbanes-Oxley, Gramm-Leach-Bliley and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. These and other regulations require corporations to audit the internal controls of their suppliers, including those that provide hosting services.

> Datastream 7i Buy: Procurement Made Easy
Does this sound familiar?
You need a new part for a critical piece of equipment. So, you fill out a purchase requisition to get the new part. Then you take it to your manager for approval. Wait, he is not authorized to approve that level of spend. The next day, it goes to the next level of management, but she’s out of the office for another week. Then, once the purchase requisition is approved, it goes into the queue on the corporate buyer’s desk—right below the rest of the company’s requisitions that are waiting to be filled.
Meanwhile, that corporate buyer has so many purchase requisitions to process the he can’t get to the new vendor agreements the he was hired to negotiate. And your new part takes weeks to fulfill.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Datastream 7i Buy offers the perfect solution: electronic procurement. Datastream 7i Buy provides a simple, Web-based solution to common purchasing problems like creating purchase requisitions, finding the right vendor, and getting manager approval. With the click of a few buttons, purchase requisitions are created with information from approved vendors. Managers are notified for approval via email and since Datastream 7i is Web-based, they don’t have to be in the office to approve the requisition; they only need an Internet connection. What’s more, the purchase order is transmitted directly to the vendors order-entry system eliminating data-entry errors. It takes only minutes!

> Tech Tip: Datastream 7i
Occasionally, my session in Datastream 7i Extended will time-out unexpectedly. Why is this?
Sessions timing out unexpectedly in Datastream 7i Extended may be resolved with a simple configuration change on the application server.
There are three factors that determine Datastream 7i Extended session timeout: EJB bean life, HTTP session timeout and the WTIMEOUT install parameter. EJB bean life and HTTP session timeouts are stored at the application server level within the jboss directory.
EJB bean life is defined in <max-bean-life> node in jboss\server\default\conf\ standardjboss.xml. This value is in number of seconds.
HTTP session timeout is defined in <session-timeout> node in jboss\server\default\deploy\ web.war\WEB-INF\web.xml. This value is in number of minutes.
WTIMEOUT install parameter is in number of minutes. This may be found within the Extended application under Administration | Security | Install Parameters.
When setting up EWS session timeout, the EJB bean life should be longer than the HTTP session timeout, and the HTTP session timeout should be longer than WTIMEOUT.
The services on the application server must be restarted in order for the changes to take effect.
